A reflection by Danny Schweers for August 27, 2023.
It is enough for us to gather the crumbs under God’s table.
We do not need to sit at the feast and enjoy the food and fellowship. Just give us the leftovers, the scraps. We are daring just to ask for that! We can eat by ourselves over in the corner or outside the door, eating whatever is unwanted by the guests. That would be enough for us but for some reason it is not enough for God. God invites us to take our place at the feast. We are the invited guests. Who would have guessed!
It is enough for us to accept the invitation.
Nothing more is required of us. Nothing more needs to be done. Yet, once we accept the invitation, we are busy, busy, busy. Faith without works, we are told, is dead. It is not that good deeds are required of us once we accept God’s invitation. It does not work that way. Instead, we want good in the world. We yearn for God’s kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven. So we gladly do what we can. It isn’t much!
It is enough for us to have been alive…
in this heart-wrenching world of wonder, to be born and then to die. Yet we have been promised heaven, the place where we, somehow, have a place reserved for us after death. A lifetime, however short, would be enough for us but we are promised eternity. Get ready!
