Mrs. Winifred Primo died peacefully on the morning of Monday, December 9, 2013, following a long illness. She was 93.
Her funeral was held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, here at The Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew & Matthew, 719 N. Shipley Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
Mrs. Primo was the wife of the late Bishop Quintin E. Primo, Jr. Following his ministry as bishop suffragan in the Diocese of Chicago, Bishop Primo returned to Delaware in 1985 as our interim bishop. Bishop Primo had previously served as the vicar and later rector of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Wilmington. Together Bishop and Mrs. Primo were recognized for their exceptional leadership in the church and in the community.
Mrs. Primo was a native of Delray Beach, Florida. She graduated with honors from St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh. In Chicago she taught for many years at Washington Elementary School. During her time in Wilmington she worked for the Employment Security Commission. She was an active volunteer serving as a board member at St. Michael’s Day Nursery, the Layton Home, and the YWCA; she was also a member of the AAUW’s Garden Club; school PTAs; and a lector at The Cathedral Church of St. John’s. She was honorary chair of the Bishop Quintin E. Primo, Jr. Lecture Series.
Our prayers were with the Primo family as they mourned this loss. May she rest in peace.
