Youth & Young Families at SsAM

Youth & Young Families 2019-2020

by the Rev. David Andrews

As we have done the last couple of years, we are partnering with Trinity Episcopal Parish and Immanuel Highlands Episcopal Church. Our Youth and Young Families (YYF) ministry is in transition as many of our older youth are now in college and so this is an opportunity to try some new things with the other Episcopal parishes in Wilmington. I wish to thank the faithful leadership the last couple of years of Beth Jones, Kathy Ouma and Nana Soto who brought energy and creativity to this ministry and my hope is that they will continue to offer their gifts to move this ministry forward.

This program year, September, 2019 through May, 2020, promises to be one where the youth of all three parishes will continue to get to know one another as well as to learn and practice being a young disciple of Jesus Christ.

Children and youth are encouraged to take on roles at SsAM, including being greeters and ushers.

YYF Members Serve the Church

YYF members are encouraged to choose an area of responsibility at SsAM: reader, greeter, acolyte, usher, etc. Every year, YYF members are active participants in the Shrove Tuesday Supper, the evening before Ash Wednesday and the start of the Season of Lent. There are many opportunities available in the SsAM music program.

Canon Casson Scholarships Are Available

Every year, the Community Advocacy Committee sponsors scholarships for students entering college and those who are already enrolled. The scholarship program is open to members who attend SsAM. Here is a link to the 2018 scholarship application form, still in use: Scholarship Application SSAM.

Camp Arrowhead

Sponsored by the Diocese of Delaware, this is a camp for youth entering third through eleventh grades. The camp experience enriches young people’s relationships with one another, nature and God. Campers develop their sense of adventure and spiritual awareness as they participate in the activities, outdoor life and community of camp. To learn more and to register for Camp Arrowhead, CLICK HERE to visit their website.

YYF Prayer

The YYF Youth composed this prayer during their retreat on September 6, 2014. It is be prayed at their meetings:

Our Lord, Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit and Creator God, Hear us today.
Let us hold fast to our dreams.
We pray for all who have guided us in the right direction.
Dear God, we pray that you heal us with your spiritual love.
Bless us with your light and protection.
We pray for everyone who struggles and is going through hard times.
We pray for anyone who has not yet spoken (pause).
We thank you for forgiving the people who have sinned.
As we move throughout our days, carrying us all to the future tomorrows, we offer these prayers in your name.
Amen.
