David Christopher, Organist and Director of Music
or call him at 302 656-6628.
David Christopher, CAGO, has served as the Organist and Director of Music at The Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew (SsAM) since April of 2001. During that time, he has developed a rich, multi-cultural musical and liturgical program based in the Anglican tradition, yet incorporating a wide range of musical styles including chant, spirituals, jazz, gospel and world music. As a liturgical organist, David's unique style of improvisation and service playing has served as the "glue" which holds together a liturgy embracing the music of many styles, cultures and faith traditions.
In addition to his work as a church musician, David has a well-established career as organist, conductor of opera, orchestral and choral music, and voice teacher to many of the region's prominent professional singers. He frequently participates in concerts of music for violin and organ with violinist Andrew Irvin as part of the Irvin/Christopher Duo. Before coming to SsAM, David served as the Organist and Director of Music at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in the Great Valley in Paoli, Pennsylvania, First Presbyterian Church in Newark, Delaware, and Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, Delaware. A graduate of West Chester University, David has studied organ with Harry Wilkinson, Robert Elmore and Alan Morrison, and voice with Cornelius Reid and Denes Striny. He is an active member of the executive committee of the Philadelphia chapter of the American Guild of Organists and recently received certification as a Colleague of the AGO (CAGO).
