Letter of December 15, 2009

Dear Friends,

I am so excited and humbled to have been called to be the next rector of the Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew. I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you and to briefly introduce myself to you. I am looking forward to beginning our ministry together in early February.

When I began my discernment with the Search Committee earlier in the fall, I was immediately drawn to your commitment to issues of justice and outreach for the Wilmington community and the world. I was impressed that even in the midst of so much uncertainty as a result of the nation’s economic downturn, SsAM is still focused on ways of reaching out to others. I can’t wait to get started!

For the last three and a half years I have been the rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Castine, Maine. Castine is a coastal community located in what is known as “Downeast” Maine. During my three-plus years as rector, I have attempted to move the parish to look outside their comfort to the larger world. This has included attempts at reaching out to the local four-year Maritime Academy.

One of my passions is to open the Church to the world in the spirit of radical hospitality. I believe Jesus calls us to welcome all, no matter who they are or where they come from. Prior to my three years in Maine, I served as rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chittenango, New York, which is twelve miles east of Syracuse, New York.

My family and I will be moving into the rectory in late January, and I am set to begin at SsAM the first week of February, with my first Sunday being February 7.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Let us bless the Lord!

Faithfully,
The Rev. David T. Andrews Jr.
