Every winter, SsAM offers its auditorium space to accommodate the homeless community on nights the city declares a Code Purple Alert.
Code Purple is declared any time the actual temperature is 20°F or below or the wind chill is 15ºF or below. Then Friendship House opens the Wilmington Empowerment Center (in our building) from 2:30 to 8:30 p.m., after which time the Salvation Army opens and provides sleeping accommodations for the remainder of the night. We provide a warm sanctuary (and restrooms) to as many as 125 people.
SSAM also provides a volunteer team to serve soup and sandwiches to the people on Code Purple nights. Our Community Advocacy Committee invites you to serve on the SsAM hospitality team. Volunteers help prepare soup in advance and/or serve soup and sandwiches to feed the hungry and cold on very short notice. There is always one person from Friendship House to provide supervision. The prep and serving time on-site commitment is from 4:00 p.m. until the feeding and clean-up is complete, usually about 6:30 p.m.
If you would like to volunteer to be part of this ministry and/or make soup, please contact Phil or Susan Murphree at 302 427-0392, or contact Saints Andrew and Matthew at 302 656-6628 or use the contact form on this website.
