Code Purple Ministry

shelterEvery winter, SsAM offers its auditorium space to accommodate the homeless community on nights the city declares a Code Purple Alert.

Code Purple is declared any time the actual or wind-chill temperature is 20°F or below. Then we open our space at 4:00 p.m. and close it at 8:30 p.m., at which time the Salvation Army opens and provides sleeping accommodations for the remainder of the night. We are open for early morning hospitality at 6:00 a.m. on the mornings following Code Purple.

SSAM also provides one of several volunteer teams to serve soup and sandwiches to the people coming in on Code Purple nights. The Community Advocacy Committee asks for volunteers to serve on the SSAM team.  Volunteers help prepare and serve soup and sandwiches to feed the hungry and cold on very short notice. There is always one person from Friendship House to provide supervision for the night. The prep and serving time on-site commitment is from 4:00 p.m. until the feeding and clean-up is complete, usually about 7:30 p.m.
